God Looks Like Jesus: The Heart of God
This was week two of our worship series, “God Looks Like Jesus.” Kevin delivered a sermon based on John 5:1-15, exploring Jesus’ healing of a man at Bethzatha pool and its deeper spiritual meanings. He explained how John’s Gospel contains multiple layers of meaning, similar to an optical illusion, and discussed possible symbolic interpretations including the man’s 38-year illness representing wilderness wanderings and the five porticos representing the five books of the law. Kevin emphasized that Jesus’ miracles in John’s Gospel serve as signs pointing to God’s character and the nature of God’s kingdom, where all infirmities are temporary. He highlighted how the story reveals human tendencies to make excuses and shift blame, while also addressing the conflict between Jesus’ healing on the Sabbath and Jewish religious traditions. The sermon concluded with a reflection on how the church serves as a house of mercy where Jesus meets people in their brokenness, challenging them to embrace healing and gratitude.
