God Looks Like Jesus

Preacher:
Passage: John 2:1-11 (NRSV)
Service Type:

Kevin delivered the first sermon in a new worship series titled “God Looks Like Jesus,” which will run through Easter. He explained that John’s Gospel, written 20-30 years after Matthew, Mark, and Luke, focuses on the throughline of Christ’s death and resurrection, offering a spiritual perspective distinct from the other gospels. Kevin discussed John’s use of symbolic details, such as the six stone water jars, to contrast the false promises of worldly pleasure (represented by the pagan god Dionysus) being the means to a full life, the false promises that a legalistic and ritualistic approach to faith (represented by the Pharisees) being the means to a full life with the authentic life offered by Jesus. He emphasized that Jesus’ transformation of water into wine represents a deeper, more meaningful life that enhances all aspects of existence, unlike the temporary pleasures of the world and the ritualistic practices of religion.
